Without knowing anything about it, I ended up going there in a day when the Pope was going to make an appearance, and that means the whole square and surrounding streets were quite busy. Also because of this, getting into the square meant going through a safety check similar to Airport check in which is understandable but a bit of a pain, cause the only way in from where I was coming from had a bottle neck with literally thousands of people trying to squeeze into the check point... Could be better prepared... Hence why the 4 stars and not 5... Other than that, it seems like the Vatican Police and other Police forces don't really have the same plan and give you different info or should I say instructions... Other than that, it is an amazing place. Magnificent architecture and it's great to see that unlike other places in Rome, this is very well looked after.

Magnificent and awesome. Quite an extraordinary place which I have seen countless times on TV and film, so finally seeing it for real was strange. I was riven by conflicting impressions. It seems so big then small then crowded then empty suddenly. Both the square and the basilica are named after Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus and the first Catholic Pope. At the centre of the square is an ancient Egyptian obelisk, erected at the current site in 1586.The obelisk was originally at Heliopolis, Egypt, by an unknown pharaoh. Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the square almost 100 years later, including the massive Tuscan colonnades, four columns deep, which embrace visitors in "the maternal arms of Mother Church". A granite fountain constructed by Bernini in 1675 matches another fountain designed by Carlo Maderno in 1613. We went at about 7pm and most people were leaving or had left already. So it was really quite quiet. So it was possible to get a feel of the place itself. Absolutely worth a visit when you are on Rome.

Great for photography and impressive structures. However I do feel like there are more impressive structures to visit around Rome considering this is part of the Vatican. Don't take this the wrong way. This square is a must visit and well worth the trip. I advise going towards the evening when most people are away. The pictures I took in the evening only had like one of two people in the background

Ample room for hordes of Catholics and tourists. Magnificent architecture with impressive statues of the saints. Unforgettable. The obelisk makes a good meeting point. Watch "The Scarlet and the Black" to see how Irish priest Msgr Hugh O'Flaherty and 4 Swiss Guards fought off the Nazis trying to assassinate him here for helping thousands of Jews escape. The Swiss Guards in the left corner make a great photo opportunity.
